Rule A.14: Abbreviation and Acronyms

TLR follows Bluebook 6.1. When an acronym will be used, it should be placed in parentheses without quotations, immediately after the first use of the term. 

YES:The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is a U.S. law enforcement agency.

When a term, or group of terms, is to be abbreviated or shortened, the abbreviation should be placed in parentheses in quotations, immediately after the first use of that term (or those terms). 

YES:Mr. and Mrs. Smith (together, “Defendants”) were found not guilty.
YES:U.S. Patent 890,007,354 (“the ‘354 Patents”) was found valid.
YES:In 2020, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act”) was enacted.
